Tim Piester was born in Ballston Spa, New York and joined the Marine Corps in 1974. He received his BS in Mathematics, commissioned in 1975 and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 1976 flying as a Radar Intercept Officer in the F-4 N/J/Ss accumulating over 2500 hours. In May 1985, he completed his MBA. As the F-4s retired in 1987, Major Piester served as an Air Naval Gunfire Platoon Commander for Third Marine Division integrating UAVs with other tactical weapon systems in all facets of supporting arms to include naval gunfire, artillery and air support. He continued his involvement with Unmanned Systems while serving as the Commanding Officer, Marine Wing Support Squadron 173, 29 Palms, CA by planning, constructing and maintaining the Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPV) runway for 1st and 3rd RPV Companies. He also supported the research & development, and test & evaluation of the Pioneer/Hunter UAVs and their integration with same site operations of manned aircraft (fixed-wing and rotary-wing) to include the airspace coordination issues. He retired in 1995 and started 17 years experience in Navy and Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) technical and management positions. He is currently managing teams supporting PMA-262, Persistent Maritime Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS); PMA-263, Navy and Marine Corps Small Tactical UASs; PMA- 266, Multi-mission Tactical UAS; and PMA-268, Navy Unmanned Combat Air System Program Offices. Mr. Piester has also been involved with the Seafarer Chapter Student Competition since its inception.
