Intellectual property experts to educate businesses on patent litigation

WASHINGTON — Floyd Chapman and Brian Pandya, intellectual property litigation partners at Wiley Rein LLP in Washington, will discuss unmanned aircraft systems patent infringement during a webinar hosted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at 3 p.m. EDT.

Chapman and Pandya will review key developments in patent law relevant to UAS, including what can be patented today, who can be held liable in different circumstances and recouping fees for non-meritorious patent assertions.

“The proliferation of unmanned aircraft vehicles is likely to spur a wave of patent litigation, both between competitors in the UAV space and opportunistic patent trolls – just as it did in other successful technologies from cloud computing to smart phones to GPS devices,” Chapman said. “Responding to a demand letter or patent infringement lawsuit can disrupt business and can send new technologies sideways if not handled properly.”

On the other hand, “innovative companies can face great hurdles if their competitors are misappropriating their intellectual property,” Pandya said.

The webinar, “My Company Has Been Accused of Patent Infringement; What Do I Do Now?,” will provide practical tips for companies facing common patent infringement threats, including:

— Your company is being sued for patent infringement.

— Your company receives a demand letter.

— You suspect a competitor is infringing your intellectual property.

Registration for the webinar is complimentary for qualified media and AUVSI members, and $49 for non-members.
