UAS registration task force an opportunity to streamline commercial UAS registration

By AUVSI Advocacy posted 27-10-2015 12:18

According to the Department of Transportation, the recently announced UAS registration task force will “develop recommendations to streamline the registration process for UAS to ease the burden associated with the existing aircraft registration process.”

Since the Federal Aviation Administration published the small UAS notice of proposed rulemaking in February of this year, AUVSI has been advocating for a registration process more suitable to UAS.

“AUVSI notes the FAA’s proposed identification and registration marking rule may be problematic due to the anticipated number of new small UAS registrations,” reads AUVSI’s comments on the proposed small UAS rules. “It will be more efficient in the long term to create a new sUAS online registration database instead of using the existing aircraft registration database.”

The FAA and DOT have responded, noting that “based on the Department's experience in registering small UAS authorized by exemptions granted under the authority of section 333 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, and the comments received on the proposed registration requirements in the small UAS NPRM, it is apparent that the current paper-based system for aircraft registration is too burdensome for small UAS.”

In order to support this growing commercial UAS community and the great benefits it provides, “the DOT is currently evaluating options for a streamlined, electronic-based registration system for small UAS.”
